A modern technical apprenticeship scheme for web development. 12 month programme of industry led, learner focussed training and mentored on-the-job experience.

What do we Do?

We recruit young people, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, and train them to become a full stack web developers, coaching them through a year long work placement with a web development team. All our apprentices work towards a qualification - ‘Software Developer level 4’ - part of the new Government Apprenticeship Standards.

Core Skills

We know that code is not even the half of it - what makes a great developer are their core skills - things like being able to communicate well, make effective decisions, research and prioritise. The scheme values these skills extremely highly and all our training seeks to enhance and develop these areas within your apprentice and your wider team.

Industry led with expert trainers

Everyone who creates, reviews and delivers the training on this course is a practicing professional and an expert in their field. Our course content is constantly reviewed and adapted according to user feedback. The training framework responds to the changing needs of the industry, the business and the candidates involved.

Support for businesses and teams

We don’t just support the apprentices on our scheme - we recognise that the candidate’s team is absolutely vital to their success because they will be learning on the job. With that in mind we provide a great deal of support and additional training for mentors, team leaders, co-workers or anyone involved with the candidate.

Collaboration & cooperation

A year is a short time to train an apprentice to become a full stack web developer. However we are able to deliver a very high standard of training and support through the collaboration and cooperation of alumni apprentices, current and previous employers and other interested people.

Learner Focussed, constantly improved

We deliver learner focussed training to small groups (a maximum of 12 per cohort) as this model is proven to be the most effective. We use the Kirkpatrick model of evaluation to constantly feedback and improve on our training.

Course content

The 12 months of course content covers everything we would expect from an entry level junior developer. The majority of the technology we use and teach is Open Source LAMP stack.

The learning journey

The year can be thought of in four stages of a learning journey, from being taught and shown to self sufficiency and learning how to learn. The training we deliver mirrors this journey to maximise impact.

  1. Phase 1 ‐ Being told
  2. Phase 2 ‐ Being shown and exploring
  3. Phase 3 ‐ Participating
  4. Phase 4 ‐ Self sufficient

The candidates choose a project to complete during the year which will be used as a learning aid to cover the many different aspects to modern web development.

Costs and Funding

As the employer, you would pay the apprentice's salary, minimum by law is just £3.30 but none of the employers we work with pay below £5 per hour. Most employers also increase this rate of pay after the probation period and/or when apprentices start delivering a portion of billable work.

The training itself is match funded by the government and grants are available to employers so that, in the vast majority of cases, it is cost neutral.
